Recommended reading – Outpost

I’ve got a few book recommendations to share with you over the coming weeks, and today it’s the turn of Adam Baker’s wonderful OUTPOST. A few months back I saw the cover popping up with increasingly regularity online and I was intrigued. Several people recommended the book to me and when I discovered that Adam himself was a member of Moody’s Survivors, I immediately got hold of a copy. For anyone who hasn’t yet read it, here’s the blurb:

Outpost by Adam Baker“They took the job to escape the world. They didn’t expect the world to end.

Kasker Rampart: a derelict refinery platform moored in the Arctic Ocean. A skeleton crew of fifteen fight boredom and despair as they wait for a relief ship to take them home.

But the world beyond their frozen wasteland has gone to hell. Cities lie ravaged by a global pandemic. One by one TV channels die, replaced by silent wavebands.

The Rampart crew are marooned. They must survive the long Arctic winter, then make their way home alone. They battle starvation and hypothermia, unaware that the deadly contagion that has devastated the world is heading their way…”

OUTPOST is a great, fast read. Baker presents a truly nightmarish scenario (on many levels) which twists and turns like you wouldn’t believe. Considering the isolation and inaccessibility of the refinery location, he manages to spin the tale off in several unexpected directions whilst still maintaining an air of claustrophobic hopelessness. I really enjoyed the book, and I contacted Adam to ask a few questions about the novel and his career in general.

The Autumn artists – David Naughton-Shires

Earlier this week I showed you the sights of post-apocalyptic Lowestoft thanks to the artwork of David Naughton-Shires. Many of you will know that David also provided a number of pieces of art for www.lastoftheliving.net. I thought it was about time I featured him here and talked a little more about his work.

When the call for Autumn artwork first went out in Summer 2010, David was one of the first to respond. Within days he’d sent me illustrations for Brigid Culthorpe and Jacob Flynn, and even more art soon followed: Karen Chase, Jim Harper and my personal favourite, Office Politics (see below). David’s distinctive style is quite unlike the approaches taken by the other contributors to the site, and I think the mix of approaches works well.

Scream Magazine issue 8

Issue 8 of SCREAM is out now. As well as the usual stack of great features, reviews and interviews, it also features an in-depth interview with me which was carried out by Michael Wilson of the superb Read Horror website.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, SCREAM is a magazine for people who genuinely love horror, not just those who want to sell it. Click this link to pick up a copy, and try it for yourself if you haven’t already.

Location, location, location

You’ve heard me talking about Lowestoft a lot recently. Ryan Fleming, one of Moody’s Survivors, visited the town after reading THEM OR US and, armed with the book, a local, and a tourist’s guide of the area (written by me), he took photographs of some key locations. The very talented David Naughton-Shires (who you’ve met before if you’ve been a regular visitor here, and who you’ll be meeting again very shortly) then worked a little of his post-apocalyptic magic on the pics. I used them to illustrate my presentation last week, and I thought it would be good to share some of them here. Welcome to Lowestoft!

Visiting the end of the world

Okay, maybe that headline’s a little unfair on Lowestoft: it’s not really the end of the world, but it is the east coast town where much of THEM OR US takes place, and it’s where I was last Thursday evening to mark the UK release of the final book in the HATER trilogy.

I’m going to post again later this week and explain more about why and how Lowestoft was the perfect setting for the book, but for now I just wanted to report back on the launch event and thank a few folks for their help in making it a success.

We kicked off with a well-supported Waterstone’s signing, before moving on to Lowestoft Library (a location referenced in THEM OR US) for more signing, followed by an illustrated talk and a question and answer session. Thanks are due to David Naughton-Shires for producing some great post-apocalyptic artwork (an example of which is below, you’ll see more in my next post), and to Iain McKinnon and the cast and crew of Projekt for the video clips I used. You’ll probably not have heard of Projekt before… in early 2010 we produced a series of HATER viral videos which were designed to tell the story of the first book, and set the scene for DOG BLOOD. Unfortunately rights issues prevented us from releasing the footage (and the position’s still the same), but it was great to finally be able to show a few brief snippets.

An evening with David Moody - artwork by David Naughton-Shires

At this point I need to mention the audience – many of whom had travelled considerable distances to be there (but let’s be honest, you have to travel a considerable distance from anywhere to get to Lowestoft – that’s why it made such a perfect location for THEM OR US!). There were plenty of Survivors there, and huge thanks to them for their ongoing, yet vaguely stalker-ish support. More about that in another post which is coming shortly…

Thanks also to Jane Rothon and the staff of the library for being so accommodating, to Ivan Bunn for the technical support, to Jo and the staff at Waterstone’s for actively supporting the event with real enthusiasm, to the staff at the Chinese restaurant most of us ended up in for the most bizarre dining experience I can remember in a long time, and finally to Emma Bunn for being the glue which held it all together. Emma – if you hadn’t spotted my wife and I out drinking in a Lowestoft pub last summer, the event would never have happened!

Moody’s Zombie Survival Guide in SciFiNow

The latest issue of SCIFINOW MAGAZINE (issue 61, cover pictured opposite) is a cracker. As well as all the usual genre features, reviews and interviews, there’s also a storming review of THEM OR US (a tour de force of a story that skirts around the worst excesses and cliche of the genre to offer up something as distinctive as a fresh bite-mark), and my personal guide to surviving the zombie apocalypse. It’s a great double-page feature that looks at the pros and cons of some of the places you might find yourself when the dead rise (and, as we all know, they inevitably will!).

I had a huge amount of fun writing the piece, although it made me realise that I’ve spent far too much time thinking about the living dead over the years! Why not pick up a copy and see if you agree with my tactics?

Yet another UK TV showing for the AUTUMN movie

The AUTUMN movie gets yet another UK TV showing in the early hours of Thursday morning. It’s on the Horror Channel at 2:20am.

And while I’m posting, don’t forget that I’ll be in Lowestoft tomorrow evening, talking about THEM OR US. There are more details here, and there’s a nice report from the local paper here.

AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION – out now

I’ve been waiting years to be able to type that sentence! AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION was finally released today through Thomas Dunne/St Martin’s Griffin in the US. First announced in 2006 and finished in 2008, it’s taken far longer than I ever expected to get the book out. It seems to be going down well, though…

Library Journal said: “In Disintegration, the best installment, Moody ventures into Lord of the Flies territory. The juxtaposition of the two groups of survivors and the consequent tension between them produces excruciating suspense not seen before in the series. The ending is utterly chilling…

28dayslateranalysis.com said: “The wait was well worth it.

And after keeping you waiting for several years too many, I can’t wait to hear what you think of it. Please grab the book and let me know. The UK edition, by the way, is out on December 29th. Apologies for the extra delay, UK readers.

Coming soon – more short stories featuring the new characters from DISINTEGRATION, a chance to win some original AUTUMN artwork, and your first glimpse into the dead world of AUTUMN: AFTERMATH.
