Author Z.A.Recht has died

Plague of the Dead

Permuted Press has announced that Z.A.Recht, author of Plague of the Dead and Thunder and Ashes, has died.

This is shocking, horrible news. I never had the pleasure of meeting Z in person, but I talked to him by email as recently as last month. He seemed like a genuinely good guy – polite, funny and enthusiastic about all things zombie. Plague of the Dead has been picked up as part of a deal between Permuted and Pocket Books and is due to be re-released later this month. Such a shame that Z won’t be here to see it.

My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends at this terrible time.

Domain of the Dead

You might remember me mentioning Iain McKinnon in my post about Grimmfest last month. I said you’d be hearing more about Iain, and here’s why: Permuted Press has just published his debut novel Domain of the Dead. I was honoured to be asked to write an introduction to the book, and you can see my endorsement on the cover above. It’s a great read – an exciting, fast-moving, traditional zombie novel with a cool cast and more than enough wild moments and flashes of originality and invention to keep even the most jaded fan of the Undead entertained this Christmas. As if that wasn’t enough, you can watch a trailer for the book (and an absolutely cracking zombie-short – The Dead Walk) over on Iain’s official website, www.domain-of-the-dead.com.

But if you want to see something REALLY scary, check out this picture of Iain and myself taken at Grimmfest when Iain was kind enough to host the post-screening AUTUMN Q&A session.

Domain of the Dead is available now from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and many other bookstores.

A couple of US pre-orders for 2010

My first US releases for 2010 have started to appear online. You can now pre-order the paperback edition of HATER, which hits stores on 13 April next year. Click the cover for more information.

And then, just a couple of months later, DOG BLOOD will be released. The US hardback edition from Thomas Dunne Books can now be pre-ordered here.

More details for more countries to follow very soon!

About that book sale…

Thanks to everyone who has already ordered books from my impromptu book sale. Some titles have already sold out and I seem to have spent more time in the post office than I have at my desk this last week!

I just wanted to say a couple of things…

  1. if you’re thinking of ordering, get in fast!
  2. I’m going to hold a quick competition to thank everyone for their interest and their orders

At the end of 2009 (or when my stock of books is gone, whichever comes sooner) I’ll put the names of everyone who has made an order since the sale was announced into a hat. One name will be drawn at random and that person will receive:

  • a piece of AUTUMN artwork signed by Dickon Tolson (who plays Carl in the movie) and myself
  • a HATER t-shirt
  • a couple of additional signed books which are so limited they didn’t even make it into the sale!

Thanks again for your enthusiasm and your orders. To learn more, please visit www.infectedbooks.co.uk, and if you have any questions, contact me here.

Dog Blood

Okay, so the book is still more than 6 months away, but it’s up for pre-order on Amazon.co.uk so I thought this would be a great opportunity to tease the UK edition.

Picking up three months after the end of the first book, DOG BLOOD follows Danny McCoyne as he fights through what’s left of the bizarre, brutal, violent and seriously screwed-up remains of the post-HATER world. Here’s a summary from Gollancz (which you shouldn’t read if you haven’t read HATER):

“The world has suffered a catastrophe of unknown cause, dividing humankind into two: the Haters and the Unchanged. Each group believes the other to be the enemy; each group is fighting for survival. Only by working together can the enemy – whoever that enemy is – be defeated. There are no other choices. Danny McCoyne has managed to break free, and after days of indiscriminate fighting and killing, he is determined to make his way home, to recalim the only thing of any value to him in this strange new world: his daughter Ellis. Unlike his wife and son, Ellis is like him, and he knows, in his heart of hearts, that she is not dead. His dearest wish is for Ellis to be fighting for the world at his side – but Danny soon discovers his daughter is worth far more than just another fighting body. Others like him have discovered that children are absolutely vital to the cause. They are strong, small, fast, and they have no inhibitions. They are pure Haters…”

Watch this space – there’s more to come early in the new year including some free fiction to span the gap between the two books and, to mark the release of DOG BLOOD and the US mass-market paperback of HATER, an ‘interesting’ competition! More soon.

Grimmfest Newsletter Competition

The Grimm Up North festival may be over for this year, but the organising team are already planning future events, so please check their website regularly.

They’ve just announced a few quick competitions to win merchandise that was donated by the guests, and you can get your hands on some signed books and T-shirts from me. To stand a chance of winning you’ll need to:

  1. Visit the Grimm website here, go to the Contact page and sign up for their newsletter
  2. Click here to send an email (subject DAVID MOODY COMP) with the answer to this question: What relation is Dickon Tolson, star of AUTUMN, to the director of the movie?

Good luck. And remember, you have to sign up to Grimm’s newsletter to be eligible for the competition.

Signed and rare books for sale

Bit of an unusual post, this one… I’ve been clearing out my office and my attic and I’ve decided it’s time for a sale! In perfect time for Christmas (coincidence – honest!), I’ve found a few boxes of books which I’m selling off through www.infectedbooks.co.uk.

There are a few special items here which I’d like to draw your attention to…

I acquired a small batch of copies of the original Infected Books edition of AUTUMN for the recent Grimm Up North festival, and I’m selling off the surplus. Please get in quick – this is absolutely the last time the book will be available before its re-issue through Thomas Dunne Books in the US and Gollancz in the UK in September / October 2010.

Autumn Straight to You Hater

Also, whilst clearing out I discovered a couple of copies of the original Infected Books release of HATER and a box of hardcover copies of Straight to You. Those of you who’ve followed me for a while will know that whilst I still love the concept of Straight to You, I think the book has dated badly and I’m more than happy to let these copies go. I haven’t wanted to set a specific price for these rare editions (only 500 copies of the Straight to You hardback were ever produced, so this is about as rare as it gets for me!). I’m happy to accept any sensible offers based on how much having the books would mean to you.

I hope this is interesting to some of you. If you have any questions or you want any more information, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Use this page here to contact me.

Grimm Up North

Just a quick, belated word about the Grimm Up North festival in Manchester last weekend.

It was a cracking event with a well-supported screening of Autumn taking place on the Sunday. Dickon Tolson (who plays Carl in the movie) was also there and the two of us sat down for a Q&A session after the showing. Huge thanks to fellow author Iain McKinnon (remember that name – more news about Iain coming in the next couple of weeks) for stepping in at the last moment and hosting the session. The Q&A was taped, and as soon as the footage surfaces I’ll post a link.

Thanks to the organisers of the event for showing Autumn and for inviting me along. Thanks to them also for shoving us in a room with a load of props from the workshop of legendary monster maker Bob Keen. As a horror geek it was very cool to be interviewed surrounded by bits of dead animal and severed limbs from Dog Soldiers, Cenobites from Hellraiser and the like…!

Special thanks to those fans who came along to see the film – I really appreciate your support and I hope you enjoyed the event. It was great to meet you all and to finally put faces to the names and email addresses!

Congratulations to the organising team for putting together a very successful weekend. Congratulations also to Carl Whiteley and the Zombie-Aid team for successfully breaking a few zombie-related records on the Sunday: a UK record for the number of people taking part in a Thriller dance, a double zombie wedding and, finally, taking the world record for the number of zombies in a shopping mall (beating even the world-famous Monroeville Mall immortalised in Romero’s Dawn of the Dead!). As we left the festival the streets of Manchester were filling with more than 1800 zombies – a very surreal experience! I thought I’d be getting used to the undead by now…?!

Did you see the film, either at Grimmfest or on TV? Why not click here and add your thoughts to the discussions on the forum?

How did it get to be November already…?

I can’t believe how quickly this year is going. Hope everyone had a good Halloween weekend. I certainly did, because I got to watch the AUTUMN movie on the big screen at Grimmfest! A full report will follow later this week…

In the meantime, a couple of new interviews are now available to listen to.

First off, Gregory Solis (author of Rise And Walk) put me in touch with Celina Andrade of Pirate Cat Radio in San Francisco and we spoke last week. You can download our conversation by clicking here…

Secondly, the final part of my interview with Vatikanet in Norway is available to listen to by clicking here.

Thanks to both Celina and Knut from Vatikanet for the great questions!
