It seems like we’ve been waiting forever, but from today the AUTUMN movie is finally available (legally available!) on DVD in the US. You can order a copy from Amazon.com, get it via Netflix or rent it from Redbox. I’m told it’ll soon be available from over 20,000 retail outlets too.
AUTUMN has always been a polarising story: lots of people like it, plenty more hate it. It’s an unconventional approach to zombies that seems to annoy as many readers as it pleases, and the movie adaptation is proving to be no different. In fact if anything, the reviews of the film have so far been even more divisive. I always knew a zombie story without flesh eating and mindless blood, guts and violence wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste!
I’m going to talk more about the film in the coming weeks (I’m trying to time my coverage to take advantage of today’s release, the UK DVD release in early May, and a screening I’m going to be introducing in Northern Ireland on 1st May), so I’ll not say much more today. All I ask is that you watch the film with an open mind and remember that it was made with huge enthusiasm but on a very low budget. I’m really interested to hear what you all think of it. Add a comment below or sign up and discuss the film on the forum.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, albeit the not-so-legally available version (sorry David!), so I’m eagerly anticipating the UK DVD release. Thought the performances by the leads were excellent, and – while it was a faithful adaptation – more than that, it captured the book’s atmosphere.
Some ill-advised editing choices really turned me off initially, but the longer I watched the film, the further it sucked me in, and some of the later scenes were exactly as I saw them in the book.
I’m sure the film has taken some heat due to its pacing in relation to other zombie flicks, which is like comparing ‘The Road’ to ‘The Book Of Eli’: same subject matter, wildly different executions. If anything I could’ve used another thirty minutes of character development before the dead rose, but I’m sure more would be a hard word to say on a tight budget. lol
When even Romero is kicking out nonsense nowadays, this was a breath of fresh air (owing to the source material of course), and the film as a whole really is more than the sum of its parts.
Still hope some of those jump cuts fell under the axe of final release though. :P
Also, reading through the previous posts, the Thai DVD cover is glorious! I don’t remember David Carradine ever looking so very… Billy Moseley-ey… so very… Devil’s Rejects-ey. lol

Thank you, Rez. I appreciate your feedback (and we'll say nothing more about the download...!!!)
You're right about the film. It's an attempt to do something very different and on many levels I think it's a success. Sure there are some visible technical limitations, but what can you expect on that kind of money?
I think it's a real shame that the movie has endured such negative press since it was leaked last summer. I think much of that comes because people see the words 'zombie movie' and have very definite preconceptions about what should follow. And as I mentioned in my post, when they don't get flesh eating or guns or violence or fountains of gore, they vent their frustrations online.
Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts. Please post your opinions far and wide around the Internet!

Being a fan of the books certainly helped, but having an attention span greater than that of a five-year-old is a definite advantage, and sadly not everyone can say the same nowadays. lol
The film isn't flashy, and yes there are limitations, but I'd much rather watch Autumn in this form than the slick car without an engine it would have undoubtedly become at a major studio.
That said, despite the budgetary constraints I was very impressed with the makeup on the meatsuits, and some of the scenes were very striking visually.
Was surprised to find the books out of print when I recommended them to someone last week, but glad to see a new release in the pipeline. Sure I'll have some kind words to say about Hater when it arrives with me later this week - bloody bank holidays. :P
