This is the first film in my ‘Post-Apocalyptic Movie Club’ – a series of regular features, essays and discussions about films which depict the end of the world in one way or another. I know it’s not right, but I’m addicted to this stuff! Please check out the movie, read my thoughts, then join me to talk about it in the forum or on Facebook, Twitter etc.

It wasn’t shown again on UK TV until 2003 and despite owning a VHS copy since the early 1990’s, it had been more than 15 years since I’d watched the film when I sat down to watch it again recently. Looking back, I think I may have set the bar too high by selecting Threads as my first film for discussion. I’ve yet to find a more harrowing or thought-provoking PA movie.

Permuted Press has announced that Z.A.Recht, author of Plague of the Dead and Thunder and Ashes, has died.

This is shocking, horrible news. I never had the pleasure of meeting Z in person, but I talked to him by email as recently as last month. He seemed like a genuinely good guy – polite, funny and enthusiastic about all things zombie. Plague of the Dead has been picked up as part of a deal between Permuted and Pocket Books and is due to be re-released later this month. Such a shame that Z won’t be here to see it.

My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends at this terrible time.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the AUTUMN website will be relaunching shortly and over the course of the next 18 months, a huge amount of free zombie fiction (more than 120,000 words at last count!) will gradually be made available.

I’m looking for artists to illustrate a scene from each story (and there are between 30 and 40 of them). If you’re interested, please get in touch. Here’s a pdf which lists what I’m going to be looking for.

I’ll be completely upfront – I’m looking for volunteer submissions and I’m not offering any payment (at this stage). But if you’re looking for a way to get exposure for your artwork, this might do the trick!

If you’re interested or have any questions, please get in touch. Thanks in advance.

Just finished The Passage, a mammoth book telling an epic story! Anyone else read it yet. I can wholeheartedly recommend it! Its part 1 of a trilogy, unfortunatley we have to wait until 2012 before the next instalment (providing we haven't, as predicted, all died by then!!)

David Moody on "The Post-Apocalyptic Movie Club and the Secret Nuclear Bunker"

Forgive the bizarre title of this post – it will make sense!

I never really intended to use this website to tell you what I did on my summer holidays, but today I’m making an exception.

I’m sure any writers who are reading this will agree: we never really stop working. Even when you’re not sat at your desk staring at your computer screen, banging away at the keyboard or reading through reams of papers, signing and posting books, answering emails etc., you’re still working. You’re still thinking – thinking about the book you’re writing now or the book you’re planning to write next, or the one you were supposed to have finished last month… Being away on holiday is no exception, and often the new places you visit and the people you meet along the way provide huge amounts of unexpected inspiration.

Back in 2004 when I was writing Autumn: Purification, I started looking into the large number of underground structures which can be found along the length and breadth of the UK. Have a look at Subterranea Britannica if this isn’t something you’ve come across before – it’s fascinating. Bunkers are a mainstay of countless end-of-the-world stories and I’ve been researching them again recently for something I’m currently working on (not telling you what!). Just before the school holidays began in July and my daily writing routine went completely to pot, I posted Remain Indoors – a brief article about my intention to re-watch and write about as many post-apocalyptic movies as I could get my hands on. The response was phenomenal and even now, more than six weeks later, I’m still getting film suggestions emailed to me regularly. (Thanks to everyone who got in touch – please keep your ideas coming).

So as you can probably imagine, even though I was supposed to be on holiday, with my head swimming with post-apocalyptic movies and stories of Cold War bunkers, when the opportunity to visit such a site unexpectedly presented itself, I was in there like a shot.

Regular visitors to this site will know that I’m a big fan of Scott’s (in fact, he was kind enough to say this about a a certain new novel being released in early June: “Moody nails what it means to be human by making humans into something else. A brilliant, savage, species-wide look in the mirror.”).

Last year, Scott released THE ROOKIE, and now he’s back with the sequel: THE STARTER. Out in September but available now for pre-order, it’s described as “Star Wars meets The Godfather meets Any Given Sunday” – how can you resist that? From Scott’s site:

It’s high-stakes, win-or-die football action in the far future, as aliens and humans fill positions based on physiology and leave their blood, sweat and tears on gridirons across the galaxy.

Last season, 19-year-old rookie quarterback Quentin Barnes overcame his racism and unified his team. He led the Ionath Krakens to a lower-tier championship, a championship that earns them promotion into the meat grinder known as “Tier One.”

Now, he and the Krakens have to compete against the greatest football teams ever assembled and do far more than just survive each game. As he rebuilds the team in his own image, Quentin’s quest for a Tier One championship begins in THE STARTER.

Scott is again releasing this title independently. Demand will be high, so click the banner below to head over to the site and pre-order.

This (huge!) book is already getting some exceptional reviews around the net, and why wouldn’t it? 40+ new zombie stories from the likes of Max Brookes, Jonathan Maberry, David Wellington…

Editor John Joseph Adams has just launched the book’s official website which can be found by clicking here.
Those of you who caught the AUTUMN books first time around will probably remember my ‘Spread the Infection’ tagline. I used it for years, and I’m sure it was responsible to some degree for the book’s journey from free pdf to half a million downloads, a movie, an audio adaptation, and now mainstream publication.

The first book is out in late October (US and UK – click the covers for information, Spain and Germany – you already have it!), and books two, three and four will be following in quick succession throughout 2011.

I’ll be able to give you more details about the release very soon. In the meantime, I wanted to ask a couple of favours…

First off, I want your memories of AUTUMN first time around for some articles I’m putting together. I’ve had emails from people who were freaked out reading the free download while working alone on the night shift, others who printed the pdf off and read it in class… please let me know how you found out about the series. Also, if you were involved in the book in any way and we haven’t spoken for a while (I’ve particularly been trying to get hold of Dave Joseph who created the face on the original cover if anyone can help), then please get in touch.

Secondly, I’d really appreciate it if you’d help me ‘Spread the Infection’ again. Follow me on Facebook, Friend Feed or Twitter, sign up for the newsletter (see sidebar), and invite your friends to do the same…

There’s going to be a lot going on with the accelerated re-release of the novels – including plenty of free fiction and much more – and there will be many opportunities to get involved so I’d like as many people as possible to know!

Thanks! More very soon!

David Moody on "Remain Indoors!"

I’ve been doing a lot of press for DOG BLOOD recently and I’ve regularly been asked about my favourite movies. As you’ve probably guessed from my books (it doesn’t take a genius!), post-apocalyptic films are my thing.

My brain needs some serious recharging right now, and talking about all those classics has made me want to watch them again. So that’s what I’m planning to do. And I’ve decided I’ll write something about each of them for this site: what I liked about them, what I didn’t like, how they’ve been an influence etc. etc. etc.

There are many comprehensive lists around the internet (such as this one over at http://www.quietearth.us), but I was thinking – what are your favourite apocalyptic films? I’m always on the lookout for new films or ones that I’ve missed, so please leave a comment and recommend your top end of the world movies. As a starter, here are the first few I’ve got lined up:

Virus

Threads

The War Game

When the Wind Blows

The Quiet Earth

And remember, as fans of BBC’s Mitchell and Webb know, Armageddon doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. Just Remain Indoors!

The end of the school holidays are finally in sight and I’ll be back to posting here with more regularity again very soon!

As I’m currently trying to finish up and polish the final book in the HATER series, I thought a little tease would be in order. Please don’t read any further if you haven’t yet read HATER and/or DOG BLOOD!

I can reveal that the title of the third book will be THEM OR US, and it will hit the shelves in late Summer / Autumn 2011 (exact date to be confirmed). Just to whet your appetite, here’s a short blurb I recently prepared…

The war which has torn the human race apart is finally nearing its end. The population has been devastated and the world reduced to a poisoned, rubble-strewn ruin. With most towns and cities now uninhabitable, and with the country in the grip of a savage nuclear winter, both Hater and Unchanged alike struggle to survive through each day.

Hundreds of Hater fighters have settled on the east coast in the abandoned remains of a relatively undamaged town under the command of Hinchcliffe – a ruthless bastard who’ll stop at nothing to eradicate the last few Unchanged and consolidate his position at the top of this new world order. This fledgling society is harsh and unforgiving – your place in the ranks decided by how long and how hard you’re prepared to fight.

Danny McCoyne is the exception to the rule. His ability to hold the Hate and to use it to hunt out the remaining Unchanged has given him a unique position in Hinchcliffe’s army of fighters. But as the enemy’s numbers reduce, so the pressure on McCoyne increases until he finds himself at the very centre of a pivotal confrontation, the outcome of which will have repercussions on the future of everyone who is left alive.

A year ago, Danny McCoyne was an overlooked nobody living a miserable, empty life. Today it’s down to him alone to make a crucial series of decisions and decide who prevails. Will it be them, or us?

THEM OR US

I have decided to take the plunge and start off the forum members story. I really hope that some of you will add your own bits to it as it continues as it's only a bit of fun.

                        REGRET
She had been on mind all day; Id hardly got any work done. Buy the time I got home I was too mentally drained and felt too lazy to cook anything. If it hadn’t been for that then this never would have happened. I knew I shouldn’t have gone out when it was getting dark. I don’t think we’ve gone a night since we moved here without blue lights flashing or some junkie being frog marched from one of the flat’s opposite. I sometimes wished we hadn’t moved here, but what choice did we have. My wife was about to become a student and we needed to get on the property ladder before she did. Either that or we’d of spent the next three years renting a shithole like this instead of owning it. I guess I’m just making excuses for being such a fuck up. But if I had of stayed in then I wouldn’t be here, stood at the kitchen sink still soothing my hand under the tap, just trying to stop it from throbbing. As if I hadn’t got enough to be worrying about, and to top it off, my foods gone cold.

There was nothing I could have done anyway; he just came out of know where. I was making my back from the Chinese when it happened. Despite all that was on my mind, my stomach was growling, fuelled on by the warm smell of the chow mien that I had tucked under my jacket. It was only a little past six but the daylight had almost faded. The pale blue winter sky was being driven away, replaced by the stars and falling temperature. My breath condensed in the cold air, and the only sound came from my hurried footsteps echoing of the ally’s concrete walls. It was when I came out the end that he attacked. He leapt out of nowhere and clamped his hands on my shoulders. I instinctively put my arm up to protect myself, while at the same time gripping my food tighter with the other. Before I knew what was happening he bit down hard on my hand. I remember kicking out straight away. I couldn’t get over how easy he fell; I must have caught him off balance. I didn’t stop to wait for him to get up or see if he was ok. I was ten minutes from my flat but I ran all the way there. My lungs and muscles were burning by the time I got home. I half thought about calling the police as I threw my food onto the kitchen table, but what was the point. He’d have been long gone, and I knew I had to get my hand clean.

My hand was throbbing badly by the time I got to the kitchen sink. I guess the adrenalin was wearing off. I could see that he had broken the skin. It had already begun to puff and swell up. I knew I had to get it clean. There was no way of knowing what this guy was carrying; he smelt bad enough as it was. I can still smell him on my clothes, even over the antiseptic. By the time I’d put a bandage on and got changed, my dinner had gone cold. It didn’t matter now anyway; I was no longer hungry. I started to feel sick and my neck and shoulders began to ache. I figured I was probably suffering from a bit of shock, and I couldn’t remember the last time I’d ran that fast.

Even though it had gone cold, I was hoping the smell of the food might trigger some hunger, I had to eat something. I’d hardly touched anything on my lunch break. I’d just got off the phone with my wife and felt too guilty to eat. Instead, the smell just did the opposite. My head began to swim. I knew I had to lie down. I felt too rough to walk to the bedroom. Instead, I just slumped on the couch. When I laid down my head began to thump. A hot dull thud echoed around my brain, causing waves of nausea to wash over me. I couldn’t believe how sudden it had come on. It was only Thursday and I could tell that I was going to feel like shit for the weekend; just my luck. I wanted to do something about the pain shooting through my head, but I felt too week to move. I felt my body start to shiver and sweat. My God, what was wrong with me? I began to reach, but all my empty stomach would give up was the bitter burning bile that now caked the pillows and ran down my face. I felt the room start to spin, and I began to black out. I tried to fight it, but I couldn’t. The last thing I thought about before it went dark was how I was going to tell her. And most of all, what was I going to do after I did...

Apologies for the serious lack of updates recently – I’ve got plenty to tell you about, but finding time to post has been impossible. Ahh… that great British tradition of 6 week long summer holidays from school. As a kid it was immense – an undoubted highlight of the year. As a dad of many, trying to balance a stack of deadlines and work from home, it’s a complete bitch! I’ve been for a flight in a hot air balloon, spent a week at the seaside, made a few trips to the cinema and we’re only at week 3! Meanwhile, Hater #3 is sitting on my desk, frustratingly close to being finished, and there’s a pile of Autumn edits waiting…

I’m really pleased to announce that I’ll be a guest at the Grimm Up North festival in Manchester this Halloween, talking about book to film adaptations and signing copies of AUTUMN which will be released on 28th October. Click here for more information. I’ll hopefully see some of you there.

Right. Back to work while the kids are temporarily occupied…!

David Moody on "An AUTUMN update"

I’m getting a lot of questions about the forthcoming re-issues of the AUTUMN books in the US and UK, so I thought I should give you a proper update. I also want to talk briefly about an AUTUMN-related opportunity that some of you might be interested in.

AUTUMN will be released on 26th October in the US and on the 28th in the UK. The next three books in the series (which have been slightly reordered and are now AUTUMN: THE CITY, AUTUMN: PURIFICATION and – being released for the first time – AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION) will be released in 2011 at three monthly intervals, starting in January/February. They’ll be hardcover releases from Gollancz in the UK (with paperbacks to follow later), and paperbacks from St Martin’s Griffin / Thomas Dunne Books in the US. Here’s the cover for the American edition of AUTUMN: THE CITY. Nice, eh? Just wait until you see what they’ve put together for PURIFICATION!

So what about the rest of the series? As it stands right now, AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION will not be re-released yet (except in Germany / Austria – more news on that later). The entire book, however, including a bunch of short novellas and over 20 ‘ECHOES‘ (short stories about some of the supporting characters from the saga) will gradually be released free online to enhance and expand the rest of the series. I mentioned an opportunity at the start of this post: I’ll shortly be relaunching http://www.theinfected.co.uk, and I want all this free content to be illustrated. I’ll obviously be approaching some artists I’ve worked with previously, but there will be ample opportunity for you to submit artwork for inclusion on the site. Drop me a line if you’re interested and I’ll send you a list of character sketches / scene descriptions. I don’t mind what medium you want to work in – traditional, video, photography, comic book… anything’s fine.

So there you have it. That’s the position of the books right now. Just one last thing to tease: AUTUMN is still a five book series, so there’s still something I haven’t told you…

An AUTUMN update

A quick plug for Wayne’s new book FLU, which is due out from Snowbooks this month. Wayne, as you may remember, is also the author of Drop Dead Gorgeous which I talked about a while back.

An epidemic, they call it. The posters say to cover your mouth when you sneeze, and throw away the tissue. But such simple measures won’t stop this flu. Because when you catch the flu, armed police come and lock you in your house to die alone. When you catch this flu, it kills you in days. And when you catch this flu, two hours after it’s killed you, your eyelids snap open again…”Flu” is a pacey, terrifying, frighteningly real zombie horror story.”

All I seem to be doing lately is posting my crappy short stories on here;> so I have decided to get myself a Blog. There are three so far, two of which are on this forum, although I think one has been removed(I said they were crappy lol!) Please feel free to take a look and give me your feedback either on the blog or this thread. I know it's hard to read a lot of the crap that's on the net, but if they suck arse I would really like to know why so I can maybe improve. Many thanks all.
