The book’s been put together by Paul Kane and Marie O’Regan, and it looks like being an absolute cracker. Just check out the stunning table of contents at the end of this post. I feel wholly inadequate being listed alongside King, Herbert, Matheson and Poe, as well as the original short stories that inspired two of my favourite films of all time (THE FLY and THE THING).

You can order it now from AMAZON.CO.UK, WATERSTONES, the BOOK DEPOSITORY and all the other usual sites.

I’ll also be taking part in a couple of events to mark the release of the book. On Saturday 10th March I’ll be at Chesterfield Library for a reading followed by a Q&A with Simon Clark and the editors. On 14th and 15th April I’ll be at alt.fiction at Phoenix in Leicester. More details about that event shortly.

MAMMOTH BOOK OF BODY HORROR table of contents:

Okay, maybe that headline’s a little unfair on Lowestoft: it’s not really the end of the world, but it is the east coast town where much of THEM OR US takes place, and it’s where I was last Thursday evening to mark the UK release of the final book in the HATER trilogy.

I’m going to post again later this week and explain more about why and how Lowestoft was the perfect setting for the book, but for now I just wanted to report back on the launch event and thank a few folks for their help in making it a success.

We kicked off with a well-supported Waterstone’s signing, before moving on to Lowestoft Library (a location referenced in THEM OR US) for more signing, followed by an illustrated talk and a question and answer session. Thanks are due to David Naughton-Shires for producing some great post-apocalyptic artwork (an example of which is below, you’ll see more in my next post), and to Iain McKinnon and the cast and crew of Projekt for the video clips I used. You’ll probably not have heard of Projekt before… in early 2010 we produced a series of HATER viral videos which were designed to tell the story of the first book, and set the scene for DOG BLOOD. Unfortunately rights issues prevented us from releasing the footage (and the position’s still the same), but it was great to finally be able to show a few brief snippets.

At this point I need to mention the audience – many of whom had travelled considerable distances to be there (but let’s be honest, you have to travel a considerable distance from anywhere to get to Lowestoft – that’s why it made such a perfect location for THEM OR US!). There were plenty of Survivors there, and huge thanks to them for their ongoing, yet vaguely stalker-ish support. More about that in another post which is coming shortly…

Thanks also to Jane Rothon and the staff of the library for being so accommodating, to Ivan Bunn for the technical support, to Jo and the staff at Waterstone’s for actively supporting the event with real enthusiasm, to the staff at the Chinese restaurant most of us ended up in for the most bizarre dining experience I can remember in a long time, and finally to Emma Bunn for being the glue which held it all together. Emma – if you hadn’t spotted my wife and I out drinking in a Lowestoft pub last summer, the event would never have happened!

The human race has been torn apart, and now the war is reaching its end. There is only one question: will it be THEM OR US? The concluding book in the HATER trilogy is released in the US today through Thomas Dunne Books.

BloodyDisgusting.com said: “Like the two previous entries, THEM OR US flaunts a blistering pace and riveting dialogue… If HATER is Anarchy and DOG BLOOD is War, THEM OR US is a straight-up Holocaust, a hugely satisfying finale that really hits the post-apocalyptic sweet spot.”

Fangoria said: “As much an allegory for today’s frightening climate of terrorism, controversial wars and us-versus-them mentality as it is a horror/”zombie” yarn, the HATER trilogy has worked best when it is most human, and Danny’s struggle to remain that is the heart of this series. By the time all hell breaks loose in THEM OR US‘s finale, it’s easy to see parallels to our world’s current crises and conflicts.”

Well what a great event that was. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend Halloween…

Last night at the Warwick Arts Centre, I was part of the Halloween Horror Night event alongside Adam Nevill and Gary McMahon.

The evening was hosted by Michael Wilson of Read Horror. Each of us gave a reading, then answered a few questions. Adam read from The Ritual (and you can click here to remind yourself how much I enjoyed that book), I read Muriel (from the recent SFX Zombie special), and Gary read Down, an excellent short from his latest collection, It Knows Where You Live.

It was great to finally meet Adam and Gary, other folks including Joseph D’Lacey, Simon Marshall-Jones, and also more members of Moody’s Survivors who’d made the trip to Warwick (now roll on Lowestoft!)

It was truly heartening to see so many people supporting the event with such enthusiasm. Thanks to Adam, Gary and Michael, and thanks also to everyone who came and spent their Halloween evening with us. Writing can be an incredibly insular occupation at times (and that’s not necessarily a bad thing), and it’s great to have opportunities like this to present your work in public and get such a positive and immediate reaction. Here’s to more Read Horror events.

Just a couple of weeks now until THEM OR US is released (my author copies arrived today and they’re beautiful) and I’m very excited to announce a unique event to mark the launch of the UK edition of the book.

THEM OR US is the first of my books to heavily utilise existing real-world locations. Although I’ve always been inspired by places I’ve known and visited, in the past the settings for my novels have been fictitious. I’ve enjoyed being deliberately vague, and I haven’t wanted to tie my stories down to actual places and landmarks. But this book is different. After the events of HATER and DOG BLOOD, the population (what’s left of it) has been scattered to the UK’s extremes, away from major cities. Danny McCoyne ends up in Lowestoft – the UK’s most easterly point.

On Thursday November 24th I’ll be appearing in Lowestoft to launch the book. Following a signing at Waterstone’s (5pm – 6:30pm), I’ll then be at Lowestoft Library from 7pm where I’ll be using specially commissioned videos and artwork to tell the HATER story and show how and why the town features so prominently in the new book.

Tickets are free, but there are only 60 available so get in quick if you want to come along. Click this link to email the library and book your place. Remember to include your full name and address and the number of tickets you require.

It promises to be a great night, and I’m looking forward to seeing you there!

Got a few things to quickly tell you about today, and I thought adding them all to one blog post would be the best way to do it:

THE GOODREADS ZOMBIE GROUP

If you’re a Goodreads user and a zombie fan, why not join The Zombie Group? For one week from 24th October, Jonathan Maberry, Steven C Schlozman (author of The Zombie Autopsies) and I will be there talking about all things undead. By the way, I’m here on Goodreads if you want to add me as a friend.

ALL HALLOWS READ

Have you heard about this great initiative, brainchild of the great Neil Gaiman? Rather than me explain it, just click this link and listen to the man himself talking about his excellent idea for a new Halloween tradition.

EVENTS AND APPEARANCES

Just a reminder that I’m NOT now appearing at the Aliens to Zombies convention in LA this week – apologies to anyone who was heading there to say hello. However I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be signing at Cardiff Waterstone’s with Wayne Simmons on Friday 28th October from 12:30pm. Also, don’t forget to book your tickets for the Halloween Horror Night at Warwick Arts Centre where I’ll be reading and talking alongside Adam Nevill and Gary McMahon.

As I mentioned in my post last Friday, I had a lot planned for the weekend just gone. Some thankyous are now in order…

Thanks to Adele, Vince and the rest of the UN:BOUND team for organising a thoroughly enjoyable zombie shoot on Saturday. You’ll get to see their full video next month, but for now here’s a brief teaser:

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Thanks also to fellow authors Wayne Simmons and Jasper Bark for being such great sports, and to all the volunteer zombies who showed up on the day. And a special mention to Jenny Jackson for her stunning makeup work.

On Sunday, my annual pilgrimage to the Grimm Up North festival was the best yet. Apart from being able to watch THE DEAD (more about that later in the week), and talk about zombies in front of a large and appreciative audience, I was also lucky enough to meet director Robin Hardy (THE WICKER MAN) and take in a showing of his new movie THE WICKER TREE.

Thanks to Sim, Rachel, Steve, Laura and everyone else involved with Grimm for their hospitality and tireless enthusiasm. Maybe I’ll be able to introduce a Moody movie myself there next year (but that’s a story for another blog post…)

Tomorrow I’ll be filming with Un:Bound in Leicester along with Wayne Simmons and Jasper Bark. We’re looking for volunteer zombies, so if you’re in the Midlands and you fancy playing dead, please come along to Phoenix Square at noon. There will also be book signings etc. More details can be found here and here.

On Sunday, Wayne and I will also be at Grimm Up North (AMC Deansgate, Manchester) for a screening of the Ford Brothers’ Africa-based zombie movie THE DEAD. After the screening, we’ll be signing books, answering questions, and discussing zombies in general (as usual!).

Hope to see a few of you there!
