I don’t know how many of you are like me… thirty-something (very close to forty-something) and UK based. If you’re not then this post may not be relevant. Sorry about that, but this is something I’m passionate about!

Growing up as a young horror fan in the UK in the 1980′s, it was bloody hard to find any decent movies to watch. Dumb politicians, moralistic idiots and misguided religious fools conspired to strip our shelves of everything even mildly horrific.

Some of my earliest horror movie memories came as a result of the ‘Horror Double Bills’ which used to screen on the BBC, late on a Saturday night. There you could see Universal monster movies back-to-back with sumptuous Hammer and Amicus classics. Just click here for a taste of the superb selection of seminal horror we used to enjoy.

But, without anyone really noticing, the Horror Double Bills died out, and were replaced, on the whole, with blandness: reality TV shows, endless repeats, 24 hour news etc. etc.

I was really pleased to hear that a campaign to bring Classic Horror back to BBC TV in the UK has been started, and I wanted to ask all you UK readers to show your support. There’s a website, a Facebook page and even a petition. Please add your voice!

This isn’t just a nostalgia trip for old buggers like me. These films really were instrumental in switching me on to horror, and I don’t think I’d be writing the books I write today if it hadn’t been for those Saturday nights spent creeping back downstairs to watch TV after my parents had gone to bed, or staying up late in the school holidays and being scared half to death by Quatermass, Captain Kronos, Doctor Phibes and the like. An epidemic, they call it. The posters say to cover your mouth when you sneeze, and throw away the tissue. But such simple measures won’t stop this flu. Because when you catch the flu, armed police come and lock you in your house to die alone. When you catch this flu, it kills you in days. And when you catch this flu, two hours after it’s killed you, your eyelids snap open again…”Flu” is a pacey, terrifying, frighteningly real zombie horror story.”

As many of you know, I’m a keen advocate of viral marketing. I’m really proud of the fact that in the years I published my books myself through Infected Books, I spent less than £500 in total on publicity. I think I owe pretty much everything to the power of viral marketing.

So, as you can probably imagine, when I was asked by Jeremy Robinson (author of Pulse and Instinct amongst others) to take part in a new viral marketing experiment with a number of other authors, I was pretty keen!

Jeremy has put together a catalogue (which you can download here) which brings together new releases from, amongst others, myself, Scott Sigler, Jonathan Maberry and J A Konrath. The idea is that we each distribute it to our respective readers who, hopefully, will a). be introduced to new books they might not otherwise have come across and b). help spread the catalogue online via Twitter, Facebook etc. etc.

So, if I could ask for your help for a moment, please download a copy of the catalogue, pick a few good books for your summer reading, then pass it on to as many online (or offline) friends, book review blogs, social networking sites etc. as you’re happy to.

Huge thanks in advance from myself and all the other authors involved!

A brilliant, savage, species-wide look in the mirror.”).

Last year, Scott released THE ROOKIE, and now he’s back with the sequel: THE STARTER. Out in September but available now for pre-order, it’s described as “Star Wars meets The Godfather meets Any Given Sunday” – how can you resist that? From Scott’s site:

It’s high-stakes, win-or-die football action in the far future, as aliens and humans fill positions based on physiology and leave their blood, sweat and tears on gridirons across the galaxy.

Last season, 19-year-old rookie quarterback Quentin Barnes overcame his racism and unified his team. He led the Ionath Krakens to a lower-tier championship, a championship that earns them promotion into the meat grinder known as “Tier One.”

Now, he and the Krakens have to compete against the greatest football teams ever assembled and do far more than just survive each game. As he rebuilds the team in his own image, Quentin’s quest for a Tier One championship begins in THE STARTER.

Scott is again releasing this title independently. Demand will be high, so click the banner below to head over to the site and pre-order.

First off, I was recently asked by Mathew F. Riley to answer the question “which book would I like to be buried with?” for Horror Reanimated. My answer won’t be a surprise to anyone who has followed me for any length of time: it was John Wyndham’s classic 1951 post-apocalyptic tale of a blinded population and carnivorous, moving plants, The Day of the Triffids.

I’m often asked in interviews which authors and books have influenced me, but I don’t often get chance to explain why in any great detail. So here are my reasons why the book has been such a massive influence on me and my writing, and why Triffids is the book I’d like to be buried with.

Plague of the Dead has been picked up as part of a deal between Permuted and Pocket Books and is due to be re-released later this month. Such a shame that Z won’t be here to see it.

My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends at this terrible time.
