By offering the first AUTUMN novel as a free download, David Moody created an Internet phenomenon. More than half a million downloads later, and with a movie adaptation being released around the world (see here for current dates), the five book series is set to be republished by Thomas Dunne Books in the US and Gollancz in the UK (first book released in October 2010). A German language edition of the series is available from Otherworldverlag of Austria.

A bastard hybrid of Day of the Triffids and Night of the Living Dead, the AUTUMN books chronicle the struggle of a small group of survivors coming to terms with a world torn apart by a deadly disease. More than 99% of the population of the planet are killed in less than 24 hours. Days after the initial outbreak, the dead begin to rise. At first slow, blind, dumb and lumbering, over time the bodies gradually regain their most basic senses and abilities… sight, hearing, basic motor skills… Trapped by the restraints of their rapidly decomposing shells, the bodies gravitate towards the survivors – the only remaining attraction in the silent, lifeless world. Unable to understand what is happening to them or to communicate, the dead become increasingly violent and aggressive. The survivors are outnumbered more than 100,000 to 1.

Without ever using the ‘Z’ word, the AUTUMN books offer a new perspective on the traditional zombie story. There’s no flesh eating, no fast-moving corpses, no gore for gore’s sake. Combining the atmosphere and tone of George Romero’s classic living dead films with the attitude and awareness of 28 Days (and Weeks) later, these bleak novels are filled with relentless cold, dark fear.

The original AUTUMN trilogy (AUTUMN, AUTUMN: THE CITY and AUTUMN: PURIFICATION) follows the plight of a group of survivors as they fight to make sense of the chaos of the dead world and find shelter from the increasing numbers of corpses which relentlessly pursue them. A companion book (AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION) delves into the back-stories of many of the characters from the previous novels (where were you when the world ended?!) and also includes a number of additional novellas and short stories telling the stories of, amongst others, an office worker who carries on with the day-to day and refuses to accept that the rest of the world is dead, an 8 year old boy who tries to survive alone without his parents, a man who refuses to give up his home no matter what the cost, a local politician who is terrified he’s going to have to take charge of what’s left of his town…

The fifth book in the series - AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION – is an as yet unpublished (except in German!) story of two separate groups who have both managed to survive by adopting very different tactics. Although not directly linked to the other books, the events of AUTUMN: PURIFICATION indirectly affect the actions of the survivors in DISINTEGRATION.

A world brought up on a diet of science-fiction stories about bloody invasions and wars with other planets is asked to open its arms to three hundred aliens who are stranded in their crippled mining ship. The eyes of the world are focussed on the small fishing village of Thatcham – the site of the first confirmed, undisputable contact with an alien species. The arrival of the visitors affects everyone. Barriers are broken down, perspectives are altered and the life of every single person on the planet is changed forever. Science-fiction becomes science-fact.

Stranded without their ship, the incredibly advanced aliens throw themselves at the mercy of mankind. The initial trepidation and uncertainty of the indigenous population quickly gives way to wonder and euphoria. The visitors are welcomed as heroes and friends. Trapped until a rescue mission arrives, the aliens soon become an accepted part of society. In exchange for shelter and protection they trade their knowledge and experience, allowing the world to make countless years worth of progress in the space of days and weeks.

But not everyone is convinced. A small minority doubts the motives of the aliens. The views of these people are met with anger and hostility from their families and friends. To these people the world suddenly feels unfamiliar and cold. If Tom Winter is right, 6 billion others are wrong.
