This fourth and final AUTUMN book has been written for a number of reasons.
The book evolved from the popular AUTUMN: ECHOES series (still available free from www.theinfected.co.uk). These 'snapshots of shattered lives' were used by the author to back-fill the stories of many of the characters from the original three AUTUMN novels. By giving each of them a background and history, Moody added an enhanced level of believability and increased the overall depth of the stories. For AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION Moody has re-written and expanded the original ECHOES series and has taken the opportunity to add several new characters.
The AUTUMN novels tell a fairly linear story about the progress of a group of survivors struggling to exist in the harshest of circumstances. THE HUMAN CONDITION has allowed Moody to deviate from the plight of the main characters and explore sub-plots outside the narrative of the novels. In the book, for example, we learn what happened to the group sheltering in the Whitchurch Community Centre in the first novel, and we are able to experience the disaster through the eyes of an eight year old child. We follow the deterioration of a plague victim and discover how the bodies change from the slow, lumbering corpses of AUTUMN to the vicious, intelligent and controlled creatures which appear in PURIFICATION. We learn the fate of the troops sealed in the military bunker and, finally, we are given the opportunity to catch up with the surviving characters from the three novels more than a year after the first day of infection.
Finally, THE HUMAN CONDITION has allowed the author to explore a few 'what if…?' scenarios - a number of uncomfortable, nightmarish situations which didn't make it into the novels for one reason or another. Each one of these short stories and novellas looks at the behaviour and reactions of a few unfortunate characters who find themselves trapped in the most appalling of circumstances. Their actions and reactions, and those of the bodies around them, reveal more and more about the human condition…
It is intended that the three original AUTUMN novels should be read before reading THE HUMAN CONDITION, as various plot details and 'spoilers' are referred to in the events of the fourth book. The new book has several appendices which explain how these characters fit into the AUTUMN world.
